Event at the Capitol Recognizes April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Honors Individuals and Organizations

Denver – Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 – Today at noon, the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA) will kick-off Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) at the Capitol in the Old Supreme Court Chambers. SAAM is recognized nationally in April and every year CCASA raises awareness by recognizing individuals and organizations that have been working to address and prevent sexual assault in Colorado. This year, CCASA is honoring the following individuals:

Karen Moldovan is being presented with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s Visionary Voice Award in recognition of her work to develop and advance policies to address sexual violence in Colorado and nationally.

Bente Birkeland, political reporter for 16 public radio stations, is being recognized with CCASA’s Media Excellence Award for her investigative work on sexual harassment at the Colorado State Capitol. Her tireless efforts to uncover the truth and ethical reporting of survivor stories, that resisted sensationalizing, has been influential in elevating survivors’ issues and voices.

Representatives Faith Winter and Cole Wist are being recognized with CCASA’s Legislative Excellence Award. Representative Winter for her bravery and actions that have been pivotal in implementing measured accountability and cultural change at the State Capitol regarding sexual harassment, and her work on legislation to address sexual assault on college and university campuses. Representative Wist for his consistent efforts to support survivors, including work on HB17-1035, Sex Assault And Stalking Victims May Break Leases, and HB18-1243, Civil Rape Shield Law.

The event will also highlight the work being done through the Colorado Forensic Compliance Project by the Denver District Attorney’s Office and the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to better understand how the medical and anonymous sexual assault reporting options are being implemented in Colorado, as well as include a special performance by Casa Milagro Youth Solution.
