Presenters: Dr. Melanie Shepard is a Professor Emeritus of Social Work at the University of Minnesota Duluth and Melissa Scaia, MPA is the Executive Director of Duluth Domestic Abuse Intervention Program (DAIP).
Description: Dr. Shepard will present findings from two studies: a study exploring the perceptions of rural women on custody and visitation arrangements with abusive ex-partners and an examination of the successes and challenges reported by rural domestic violence programs that was part of the comprehensive rural TA Needs Assessment conducted by Praxis International on behalf of the Office on Violence Against Women’s Rural Grant Program. Ms. Scaia, MPA will consider the implications of the research for practice. Ms. Scaia will discuss her experiences developing and overseeing the supervised visitation program that serves 6 northern MN counties. Ms. Scaia will also describe strategies for working with the courts to address post-separation child custody and visitation issues.
