“I like their talent, but MMM… I don’t know? Could we talk about it?”
Celebrating popular talent in music and performance is a fundamental part of our cultural practices, giving us a sense of connection and belonging to our roots. But what happens when the singer or actor of our choice has been identified as an offender of sexual or domestic violence? Or when the content of his productions promotes some form of violence? How can we find a balance between continuing to enjoy their talent and being loyal to the survivors and the movement against violence?
Me gusta su talento, pero ¿MMMM… no sé? ¿Podríamos hablar al respecto?
Celebrar el talento, la música y la actuación popular es una práctica común para muchos de nosotros, estas nos brindan un sentido de conexión y pertenencia a nuestras raíces. ¿Pero qué pasa cuando el cantante o actor de nuestro gusto ha sido identificado como un agresor de violencia sexual, o domestica? ¿O cuándo el contenido de sus producciones promueve alguna forma violencia? ¿Como podemos encontrar un balance entre seguir disfrutando de su talento y ser leales a los sobrevivientes y al movimiento contra la violencia?
