Please join the Victim Rights Law Center and our project partner, Professor Brenda V. Smith, Esq., of the American University Washington College of Law’s Project on Addressing Prison Rape, for a webinar:

Eliminating Bars as Barriers: Offering Confidential Victim Services to Incarcerated and Detained Survivors of Sexual Assault, Dating and Domestic Violence, and Stalking

Tuesday, July 24, 2018 11:00 – 12:30 p.m. MT

An alarming number of individuals confined in U.S. correctional and detention facilities are survivors of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking. While confinement in prisons, jails, immigration detention, and other facilities can present challenges to the delivery of confidential victim services, these services are critical and help facilitate survivor safety and recovery. This webinar will provide an overview of confined survivors’ privacy needs, discuss barriers to confidential support services, and explore opportunities for delivery of confidential services in correctional and detention settings, including sharing ideas from advocates and lawyers engaged in this work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By participating in this webinar, victim services providers will be better able to:

  1. Articulate the need for and importance of confidential services for incarcerated and detained survivors.
  2. Explain the unique challenges confined survivors face in accessing confidential support services.
  3. Integrate victim service providers’ legal confidentiality, privilege, and mandatory reporting obligations into the work with confined survivors.
  4. Use concrete tips from the field on how to provide confidential services to incarcerated and detained survivors.
