At 7 pm on Saturday, April 13th at the Off the Beaten Path bookstore in downtown Steamboat

Springs, Advocates of Routt County will host the annual SPEAK event, featuring an array of

powerful performances and rarely told stories.

The content of SPEAK is written and performed by people living in the Yampa Valley. Inspired

by creators like 2 Dope Queens and Eve Ensler, the event was originally hosted by Young

Bloods Collective to lift women’s voices and raise awareness of the issues they face. Through a

variety of performance styles ranging from spoken-word storytelling, to slam poetry, to stand-up

comedy routines, the intention is to give a platform to those too often unheard. SPEAK has also

evolved to include performers of all genders, which means the event is now a platform for all

voices, representing all identities.

“We are deeply honored to once again be hosting SPEAK as our Sexual Assault Awareness

Month Fundraiser. Each year, we are profoundly moved by the thoughtfulness and vulnerability

displayed by our performers as they courageously take the stage in solidarity with survivors of

sexual assault. I am so grateful to live in a community that prioritizes the courageous act of

speaking out and standing up against injustice. I invite everyone to join us as we come together

to support survivors, celebrate resilience, and advocate for a world free from sexual violence.”

says Hannah Kaufmann, Program Director of Advocates of Routt County.

This year, SPEAK 2024 explores the concept of “Justice” from a wide range of perspectives.

Like so many other important words in our many languages, ‘justice’ is more complicated than

we imagine. Sometimes, the law delivers justice. Sometimes the law is the injustice. Sometimes

what is fair is not what is ethical or just. Essentially, SPEAK invites our community to share their

stories of complexity, controversy, contradiction, and justice. In the spirit of unfettered free

speech, some featured topics may be considered Rated R.

Off the Beaten Path will have libations and snacks for sale at the event. Proceeds from SPEAK

ticket sales and donations will directly support maintaining Advocates of Routt County’s 24/ 7

Safe-Line (970.879.8888), providing crisis and non-crisis support for victims of sexual assault,

domestic violence, and human trafficking.
